First Lady Michelle Obama Participates at National Science Bowl
The winning teams from the Minnesota Academy of Science’s Minnesota State Regional Science Bowls received an all-expense paid trip to Washington, D.C. to participate in the National Science Bowl. The nine students from Minnetonka Middle School West and Chaska High School and their coaches spent five days touring, attending hands-on workshops, and competing with like-minded peers at the national event. The National Science Bowl is sponsored by the U.S. Department of Energy and celebrated its 20th year.
First Lady Michelle Obama showed her commitment to science education and the National Science Bowl by participating in the final rounds of the academic competition by reading some of the questions to the finalists. She motivated the crowd of 550 middle and high school students from around the country in her keynote address when she said, “We want young people energized in the way that you all are, because we know that American brainpower in science and math has always driven this country’s prosperity, helping us make the discoveries and to build the industries that have transformed the way we live and work. That's why my husband and his administration want to ensure that every single child in this country gets a good education, particularly in math and science.”
Mrs. Obama encouraged the students to continue to ask questions, play and experiment. She said, “In the coming decades, our future scientists, engineers, and leaders are going to help tackle some of our most challenging problems. We are going to need you. Whether it’s improving our health, harnessing clean energy, protecting our security, succeeding in the global economy, we're going to need you. Our future depends on a new generation of young Americans who can help reaffirm our role as the world’s engine of scientific discovery and innovation.”

Our Third year of Middle School competition saw us grow to 19 teams from 10 schools.
A fierce Round Robin competition was waged, with 11 teams winning 2 or more of the 4 games they each played.
After lunch, Lake Harriet Upper School and St. Thomas More Catholic School competed in a tie-breaking round to determine which of them would join 7 other teams in the Double Elimination.
The match to watch in the Double Elimination was Blake Middle School vs. Hopkins North Junior High.
Both teams were new this year and both had done very well in the Round Robin winning (respectively) 3 and 4 of the games they played in that tournament.
Their first match in the Round Robin resulted in a win for Hopkins, but just a slight win of 110 over 102.
They met again in the first round of the Double Elimination, with Hopkins North winning again.
Their final match in the Double Elimination would advance one of them to the top 3 spots for the day and eliminate the other.
After 20 minutes of back and forth the teams were extremely close.
But finally, the winner was... Hopkins. Congratulations Blake Middle School on an amazing first year we look forward to seeing you again in 2011!
Participating for their second year, Minnetonka Middle School West sent 2 teams to the Double Elimination.
Both teams won repeated rounds and finally squared off against each other.
Tied as the final buzzer rang, the last question was read and the winning answer came from a Minnetonka 2 team member
who said he knew the answer because he had been reading about the Doppler effect just the night before.
Minnetonka Team 1 went on to play Hopkins and lost that round but won 3rd place!
While every school approaches building their teams differently, the Minnetonka coach said they don't stack their strongest players in one team,
they build their teams for balance so they all have a chance to win.
When asked if the two Minnetonka teams were competitive amongst each other,
a parent of two team members said the students had great camaraderie and were very well matched.
"No matter what happens, it's a win for all of us," she said.
Hopkins faced Minnetonka Team 2 in the last scheduled round.
Hopkins had won all but one of their games in the Double Elimination tournament; Minnetonka 2 had won all of theirs.
When Hopkins North won this round that meant that both teams now had one loss under their belts.
That meant that for the first time in Middle School Bowl history, they needed to play a special final elimination round.
Tension was high in the room, as the sun began to set outside.
Eight minutes in to the final round when the teams took a quick break, Hopkins was ahead by only 4 points (12 to 8).
And finally, as the last buzzer sounded, the winner of the round, and a trip to the National Science Bowl competition in
Washington, DC was Minnetonka Middle School West Team 2!
Congratulations to Hopkins North Junior High for a strong second place showing.
Let's see if 2011 will be your year to go to Nationals.

A record 36 teams from around the state gathered at Macalester for a full day of intense competition.
In the Round Robin event, congratulation go to Chaska High School, Oakland Junior High's 9th grade team, St. John's Preparatory School, St. Paul Central, and Wayzata High School for winning or tying all of their games.
18 teams advanced to the Double Elimination, but only 16 spots were available. A preliminary faceoff was held that pitted Harding High School against Woodbury High School and Mankato High School against one of the Burnsville High School Teams. The competition was close, but Burnsville and Harding emerged victorious to join 14 other teams in the Double Elimination.
The Double Elimination rounds went in to overtime as Wayzata and Chaska faced each other twice, with Wayzata winning the first round. The teams were tied in the final round, but Chaska took a commanding lead in the second half and won the second round to take the title and the right to advance to the Department of Energy National Science Bowl, April 29-May 4 in Washington, D.C. This will be the 5th time that Chaksa, coached by Jim Lund, has gone to Nationals in the last 10 years!
Having only joined the Science Bowl in 2007, this is the 3rd year that Wayzata High School, coached by Karen Hibbs, has made it in to the top 3 spots. They have proven that they are a tough competitor that can go the distance, and all eyes will be on them next year to see if it will be the year they make it to Nationals.
St. Paul Central continues to set records - this was the second year in a row that 2 of the top 4 spots were won by their teams. With the help of coach Randy Knoche, St. Paul Central has gone to Nationals twice, and has placed in the top 3 spots 5 of the last 8 years.
Minnetonka High School's Team 3 was one of 28 teams who were nominated for the Civility Award this year. With 12 nominations, they were the winner, although Benson High School, Columbia Heights High School and Mankato High School were close behind.
Welcome to new teams from: Benson High School, Chanhassen High School, Columbia Heights High School, Minnetonka High School, Oakland Junior High, and St. John’s Preparatory. 4 of these 6 new schools made it to the Double Elimination, with Chanhassen and St. John’s Preparatory placing 5th at the end of the night, and Minnetonka and Oakland placing 6th. We hope to see everyone again next year for an exciting competition!

27 teams from around the state welcomed new Science Bowl Coordinator Lisa Warbritton.
After an exciting Round Robin competition, 3 teams remained undefeated ( Blake Upper School Team 1, Chaska Team 1, and St. Paul Central Team 1). 6 teams tied at the end of the Round Robin and tie breakers were needed to determine the top 12 teams that moved on to the Double Elimination after dinner.
Of the 12 teams that advanced to the Double Elimination, the top three spots went to:
St. Paul Central Team 1, coached by Randy Knoche, won 1st place and took home $1,000 and a trip to Washington DC to compete in the National Science Bowl.
Wayzata High School Team 1, coached by Karen Hibbs, took 2nd place, won $750 for their school.
Burnsville Team 1, coached by Dr. Jennifer Hugstad-Vaa, took 3rd place honors and brought $500 back to their school.
Central Team 2 won 4th place,
Chaska Team 1 and Mankato West Team 1 won 5th place,
Coon Rapids Team 1 and Academy of Holy Angels Team 1 won 6th place,
and 7th place went to Chaska Team 2, Blake Upper School Team 1, and Blake Upper School Team 2.
This year's competition saw 17 out of 27 teams nominated for the Civility Award, a record number! Congratulations to St. Paul Academy and Summit School Team 3 who won the award this year.
Welcome to new schools: Harding High, Westbrook-Walnut Grove High and Woodbury High.
63 judges kept the competition moving smoothly. The judging team included our former Science Bowl Coordinator Barb Billington and a Science Quiz Bowl alum, David Williamson.

Despite several inches of fresh snow, all 12 teams made it to our new location at the University of MN's Twin Cities campus.
(Springfield drove 3 hours on a cold Saturday morning, but the trip proved worth it!)
Special thank you to the University for providing us a great new space and a lot of assistance at the event.

Favorable weather ensured that all 30 teams made it to Macalester for a lively competition this year.
50 judges, moderators, timekeepers, scorekeepers, and runners kept the pace flowing briskly.
The day begin with a vigorous Round Robin competition.

Our first year producing a Middle School Science Quiz Bowl brought 10 teams together for a lively competition!
Thank you to Barb Billington and Wayne Wolsey for bringing this event to Minnesota.
The Middle school students all performed wonderfully, and every team took home at least one win in the Round Robin.

An historic 31 teams competed in this year's expanded event.
The weather was clear, the volunteers were plenty, and the competition was exciting!
Two new Schools joined the game this year - Al Almal School and St. Thomas Academy.
St. Thomas joined eleven other teams in the Double Elimination game after dinner.
After a fiercely close competition, and an extra round of play,
Chaska High School Team 1, coached by Jim Lund, won 1st Place and will be competing in the National Competition in Washington DC this spring. (That's 6 1st place wins in the last 8 years for Chaska!)
St. Paul Academy-Summit School Team 1, coached by Janice Gepner, won 2nd Place and additional prizes, including a trip to the Bakken museum.
Blake Upper School Team 1, coached by Deb Weiss, won 3rd Place and additional goodies.
Congratulations also go to Waconia Team 2, coached by Mel Berg, for winning Civility Award.

A half foot of snow kept 7 teams and 10 judges from making it to the 2005 Science Bowl, but the competition
was no less nail-biting as a result! The 20 teams that braved the weather included a one-man team from Willmar High School.
This special team may not have won a round against the 4-person teams he played, but he did manage to score 30% of the points
in the games he played - quite an accomplishment! His good sportsmanship also won him this year's civility award.
Jim Lund, coach of the Chaska High School teams brought 12 sharp students to the competition, and got 3 teams in to the Double Elimination round.
Chaska continued their multi-year winning streak, placing 2 teams in the top 3 at the end of the game.
But it was Mary Henle's St. Anthony Village Senior High Team, who placed 3rd last year, that took home this year's trophy and won a trip to the National
Competition in Washington DC.

Students' heads bent together in conference, a whir of action with hands reaching for the buzzer, a groan of
disappointment or a quick high-five - these were the sights and sounds of the Minnesota Academy of Science
11th Annual Minnesota Science Bowl at Macalester College in January 2004. 22 Teams from Minnesota high schools
competed in a "College Bowl" format to answer rapid fire science questions, first in round robin, then in a
double elimination. Topics covered astronomy, biology, physics, mathematics, chemistry, computer, earth and
general science, and current events in the scientific and technical community. The event was generously funded
by Xcel Energy and hosted by Macalester College. Local scientists from the
University of MN, and General Mills helped out by judging the event.

Barb Billington accompanied the Chaska Team to Nationals and wrote to tell us
"Today we had the Hydrogen Fuel Car Races - Chaska competed in the Hill Climb (or King of the Hill event).
They won the event! Their car, named "Jim" no doubt after coach Jim Lund, was the
only car able to climb the 40 degree incline successfully! They attempted
the 48 degree incline - and were unable to reach the top - before running out of time."
Barb later wrote "Good Morning from DC. Just thought I'd let you all know that Chaska's
Science Bowl Team won the opportunity to compete in the Double Elimination portion of the National Science Bowl.
During Round Robin competition they won 7 of their 8 rounds to win the chance to move on.
They competed in two rounds of Double Elimination last night - but unfortunately lost both rounds so they are out
of the competition today. Other teams will continue in double elimination to determine the champions.
The Chaska students have won prize money for their school for being one of the top 16 schools at the competition.
(I think it's $1000 - I'll know for sure later today.) And they also won $1500 for their school for winning the
Hydrogen Fuel Car King of the Hill Challenge earlier this week.
In addition, I will be accepting the 10 year Award on behalf of the MN Academy of Science.
I think that this experience has been great. I've got a lot of good ideas for bolstering our program in MN."
